Since I was 13, I have dreamed of studying in a different country. Like most people, I wanted something different out of life, and movies like The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Lizzie McGuire, and Eat Pray Love had me picturing myself living a cosy, adventurous life abroad, studying in charming cafes with a thick scarf around my neck while sipping a hot brew of black coffee, exploring cobblestone streets, and making lifelong memories with friends.
That was only half true. I hate coffee, and let’s just say there’s only so much time for adventure when assignments, tests, and projects are constantly breathing down your neck.
Little did I know, Europe wasn’t the only option for studying abroad. After months of researching universities across continents, I made what turned out to be the best decision of my life: move to Malaysia. It was not what I initially imagined. Malaysia didn’t align with my ‘Europeanesque montage’ fantasy, and I’ll admit I was hesitant. I didn’t know much about the country, and it felt like a leap into the unknown. But truthfully? I wouldn’t change a thing.
A Steady Start
One of the first things that made this move less daunting was the application process—it wasn’t nearly as tedious as I’d expected. Unlike applying to universities in Europe or the U.S., everything about Malaysia’s system was straightforward and well-organised. The clarity made a huge difference in helping me feel confident about my decision.
Affordable Living
Another reason I chose Malaysia was how affordable it is. Living and studying here is so much cheaper than in most Western countries. My monthly expenses, including rent, food, and transport, range from about RM 3,500 to RM 4,500, which is roughly 8,000-10,000 Namibian dollars. And for that price, you’re still living comfortably. The food? Amazing and cheap (Oh my days, the shawarmas and nasi goreng!). The public transport? Modern, efficient, and cleaned a thousand times a day. And the conveniences? They are everywhere—open at all hours because, honestly, Malaysians don’t sleep!

Exploring Universities
Malaysia has some incredible universities. I chose Asia Pacific University (APU) because of its focus on innovation and technology and how welcoming it felt to international students. However other universities like University Malaya and Monash Malaysia also stood out during my research because of their global rankings and diverse communities. No matter where you end up, the universities here are well-equipped and incredibly supportive, especially for someone moving so far from home.
Challenges & Growth
That’s not to say it’s all smooth sailing. Adjusting to the tropical heat was a serious struggle at first. I’m talking constant sweat and humidity that takes a while to get used to. University life also felt different; the teaching style here is more project-focused, which was a bit overwhelming at first considering I’ve never been one for group work. And then there’s the homesickness. But in a place where everyone misses home, you end up forming your own community—a blend of mixed and shared cultures, where little fragments of home begin to embed themselves in the faces you see every day. Over time, I’ve learnt to adapt and embrace the challenges.

The Best Surprise
What I didn’t expect was how safe and welcoming Malaysia would be. Ranked the 10th safest country in the world, I can walk home from a night out with friends at 4a.m. without worrying about being catcalled or concerned if my phone is still in my pocket. Plus, Malaysia’s cultural diversity is unmatched. I’ve met people from all over the world, explored traditions I’d never heard of before, and eaten some of the best food of my life.

Studying in Malaysia wasn’t the European dream I originally imagined, but from free tickets to Rema, hastily planned trips to exotic islands, and friends that turned into family, it turned out to be something even better. It’s been a mix of adventure, growth, and unexpected lessons, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Movies might romanticise studying abroad, but the reality? It’s even better!
