In this article, we sit down with Michelle Tanatswa Tsatsa, a foreign student currently studying at the University of Namibia, to gain insights into her experiences and gather valuable advice for Namibian students aspiring to study abroad.
The Journey Begins: Applying to Foreign Universities
Michelle, like many ambitious Namibian students, dreamt of expanding her horizons and gaining an international perspective through higher education. She shares her journey of applying to foreign universities, emphasising the importance of careful planning and thorough research. She says that, due to her prior research and readiness, applying to UNAM was quite straightforward.
“Unfortunately, registration was quite difficult, especially since I hadn’t looked at my prospectus to inform me on what to register for or not,” she exclaims, adding that she registered online, and thus warns students who wish to apply online to have a vivid idea of what they wish to register for when they are accepted.
Michelle stresses the need to thoroughly research potential universities, considering factors such as academic programmes, campus culture, and location. “This step ensures that the chosen university aligns with the student’s academic and personal goals.”
Each university has its own set of admission requirements. Michelle recommends diligently reviewing these requirements and preparing all necessary documents well in advance. This typically includes academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and standardized test scores.
“This helps when one tries to register as it ensures a quick and easy online registration, instead of finding yourself in front of the computer not having all the required documents,” she adds.
Start early; learn everything you can about the school and country before you go ahead and apply. Try your best to find friends already enrolled at the chosen university so they can help you with applying and all the other necessities.

She adds that studying abroad can be financially demanding. Michelle advises prospective students to explore scholarship opportunities, both from universities and external organizations. Creating a realistic budget for tuition, living expenses, and other costs is crucial for a stress-free experience. She stresses that navigating the visa process can be quite daunting, but she found the university’s guidance invaluable. She recommends starting the visa application process in advance to avoid any delays.
An International’s Experience
Michelle’s journey led her to the University of Namibia, where she is currently pursuing her degree in sociology and anthropology. She shares her experiences as a foreign student, shedding light on the university’s support systems and the warmth of the Namibian community.
Adapting to a new culture can be challenging, but Michelle emphasises the welcoming atmosphere at the University of Namibia. The institution provides support services, including orientation programmes and mentorship, to help foreign students integrate seamlessly into campus life.
I have to say, I have matured a lot over the past 9 months; university has helped me grow.

Michelle concludes by saying that UNAM was a bit difficult to adjust to.
“Especially since I was so far from home and starting university, not to mention the uphill battle that was core semester, but with new friends and learning how to find my way around, I think I’m comfortable enough to get lost in Namibia now.”
