You may want to channel your inner interior designer this season and flip your space into one that represents your personality and vibe. Whether that’s choosing what color to paint your wall, which lamps to purchase, whether to have a curtain or invest in blinds, we got you figured out.

In this article, we will look at key things to consider when decorating a small space.

Pay attention to colors!

There is the belief that if you want a small space to appear bigger, you need to paint it white. While that may have some degree of accuracy, not everyone would like to live in a white room (it’s giving mental asylum).

Dark colours like greys and greens give off a more warm and cozy atmosphere, so perhaps consider painting the ceiling and walls the same monochromatic color to make a statement. According to Hadley Court, your eyes won’t mark out where the walls end and the roof starts, giving the illusion of a bigger space. Otherwise, you can use two colors that compliment each other really well and let your inner Picaso take charge and be creative.

Light it up!

Although the overhead light may be sufficient, if you’re able to, get smaller lights. This can be a lamp on your study table or ring lights around the mirror and even underneath your bed to give it that aesthetic glow. It doesn’t have to be bright light—even some that gives off that yellow autumn hue. There are a variety of lights to choose from, from the ceiling to the bedside table, as well as mounted and floor lamps.

Off-The-Wall

Now I’m internally geeking. I loooove shelves! They are the perfect solution for when you don’t have a lot of space to work with. Instead of adding a cabinet, closet, or more tables, add floating shelves to your room. They can be above the headboard, near your study desk, beside the window, etc. Just about anywhere.

And be stylish with them. In the corners, you can have rounded shelves, a long rectangular one above your bed, and smaller ones next to the window where you can put your plants. You can almost never go wrong with shelf placements. Additionally, you can have hangers for your towels, jackets, and even photographs. Usually, hooks can act as shelves too!

The idea behind maximizing small spaces is to avoid them looking or feeling overcrowded in the end. You want to make it look bigger, not bump into something at every turn. For more interior design ideas, check out The Spruce. They are our first stop for inspiration!
