I remember a time when I only listened to gospel music on Sundays because, at the time, I thought that was the only day reserved for it. I didn’t really think much about listening to gospel music during the week, and while I enjoyed the likes of Kirk Franklin, Tasha Cobbs, and Hillsong, it still all just sounded like typical Christian artists and their music, which isn’t a bad thing, but it didn’t really align with some of my favourite genres like R&B, hip-hop, and rap.
However, with the rise of new-age Christian artists like Alex Jean and Caleb Gordan, I find myself grooving to these tunes when I’m running errands, doing chores, or even at the gym.
So, without further ado, here’s a curated list of 10 Christian artists to vibe to for your every mood or appetite.
1. Marie Love
Anyone who’s a SZA fan will fall in love with Marie Love! Her vocals are like melted butter as she takes on the lilt of a jazz singer, bringing a very warm and soulful twinge to her sound. Songs like “Guide Me” and “War for Peace” are what I listen to whenever I have a few errands to run.
2. Lord’s Child
Lord’s Child has a very mellowed-out tone that will have you zoned out from the first note. His songs have a lo-fi-like sound with their dreamy audio and relaxed-retro quality. His vocals are something else, and the earthy tenor of his tone has a quality similar to Brent Faiyaz (without the toxicity, of course!).
3. Sondae
Whenever I listen to him, I get this absolute burst of energy and motivation. “Elohim” has me head-bopping while I get ready for school and gives me the mental stimulation I need for the day ahead. His music has a very light-hearted, bubbly melody that generates good vibes and has you filled with childlike energy.
4. Caleb Gordon
I was introduced to this artist on a Sunday on the way to church and have not let go since. He is a great rapper, and his lyrics are filled with so much life and truth. If you’re looking for something that falls into the trap genre, then you’ve found it!
5. Morgan J
She is refreshing! Her voice has a very soft whisper-like quality to it, aimed at getting you to chill out after a stressful day or if you feel like spending time by yourself to reflect on scripture and life in general.
6. Evan & Eris
This duo is strictly vibey with a delicate, fluttery quality that is reminiscent of Jhene Aiko. Their voices have a matching soothing, sultry tone, making for the perfect ambient noise for your daydreams.
7. Asha Elia
Asha Elia‘s music is a mixture of reggae, R&B, and pop, making for a soulful combination. Her honeyed voice is full of layered tones and intonations that have you swaying along to the vibrant background beats.
8. Madison Ryann Ward
“Anchor” is one of my anthems. Madison‘s music uplifts me in a way like no other, as her lyrics give way to feelings of peace and acceptance. Her songs are relatable and guide me back to God after I feel as though I’ve fallen into sinful cycles. Her voice is high-pitched with an airy eliement to it that has a tranquillizing effect and gets me feeling ready to pour my heart out to God.
9. Secret!
Secret! is the kind of guy you listen to when you’re having feelings of frustration and need some stress relief. The bass is rich and loud, with a drill-style approach that will have the neighbours complaining… Just Kidding!
10. Alex Jean
Yes, I saved my favourite for last: The Pop Smoke of Christian rap, Alex Jean. His deep, low tone and husky quality will have you replaying his songs over and over again. He cuts and samples popular songs and turns them into worship and praise with fluidity and ease.
I hope that this sneak peek into my playlist will help you include Christ in your daily life and make praise and worship something more accessible to you, no matter your mood.
